Learn To Teach. Become A Better Pilot

The Flight Instructor Principles and Methods of Instruction (PMI) course is a requirement for any pilot that is considering a career pathway that involves teaching flight training, whether that be through practical aircraft training, flight simulator training, drone training or ground theory. A standard component of the Flight Instructor Rating (FIR), we also offer this PMI as a standalone course. The PMI course doesn’t just give you the confidence to become a better teacher, it solidifies and strengthens the knowledge you have already gained as a pilot. Learning how to best teach the next generation of pilots is a skill that will make you a better pilot yourself.

Learn Wherever You Are

Our Principles and Methods of Instruction (PMI) course is offered in 2 different delivery methods. This allows pilots to choose a study option that suits their location and other life commitments and get the most out of their training. Course options include:

1. Face to Face: Scheduled group classes taught at Learn To Fly’s state-of-the-art training facility in Melbourne, with another 3 additional instructor theory hours included;

2. Virtual Classroom: Scheduled group classes presented using the Zoom Meeting online platform, with another 2 additional online instructor theory hours included;

  • 1. Risk Management

    The aim of this chapter is to discuss and demonstrate various risk management techniques and their application within the flight training environment. Risk assessment and management is paramount for safety both in the air and on the ground and should not be underestimated as an essential part of flight training.

  • 2. Effective Communication

    Verbal and written communication forms the basis for any kind of training. We explore this topic area in-depth and discuss various methods and approaches to allow future instructors to develop solid communication foundations for teaching.

  • 3. Human Behaviour & The Learning Process

    Human behaviour and its relationships towards the learning environment is examined to give students an in-depth understanding of factors that may affect and improve learning. This key topic examines a range of personality types and outlines how to develop more effective training methods for each.

  • 4. Lesson Planning & The Teaching Process

    Planning and effectively teaching a lesson goes far beyond simply reading from a book. This important subject area looks at the different stages of student learning, and how to prepare and plan for a variety of student personality types. This skill set is extremely valuable and will teach you how to plan lessons for a broad range of subjects. It will also allow you to know when and how to reassess those plans to cater for different student learning levels.

  • 5. Effective Assessment Techniques

    As an instructor or teacher, learning how to assess your students can be just as important as the teaching process itself. An effective assessment will identify areas to work and improve on, but also focus on methods of improvement, which can then allow students to develop more effectively as their learning progresses.

  • 6. The Flight Instructor Role & Responsibilities

    A Flight Instructor’s roles and responsibilities encompass many important areas. Learning about the job itself and the skills required is essential, as Flight Instructors become role models for the future pilots they are training, regardless of whether they are in the air or on the ground. Exploring this subject area outlines the need for awareness and the obvious benefits of demonstrating high standards and values in a training environment.

  • 7. Effective Flight Instruction Techniques

    This topic looks at applying the teaching methods and knowledge about the learning process into practice specifically during flight instruction. We look at specific flight training events that instructors will experience whilst teaching students and also work on the best techniques to not only handle situations well when they happen but have the ability to use them to further enhance student learning.

Our Graduate

Summer Russell

“Completing the PMI course allowed me to understand the fundamentals of why we learn and how to adapt techniques to suit a variety of students. This has allowed me to develop my own teaching style, which I will take with me throughout my career. LTF’s experienced instructors come from various aviation backgrounds, providing a unique perspective on topics that enhance understanding beyond just following a textbook, with a strong focus on creating a fun and supportive learning environment.“
