An Instrument Rating is a requirement for most aviation career pathways. It opens the door to a whole new world of flying, allowing you to plan and conduct flights in a far wider range of weather and light conditions. This Instrument Rating Examination (IREX) Theory Course provides you with detailed insight into Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) theory and gives you the knowledge you need to best prepare to pass the CASA IREX exam. We have a range of course delivery options available.

1. Face to Face: Scheduled group classes taught at Learn To Fly’s state-of-the-art training facility in Melbourne, with another 3 additional instructor theory hours included;
2. Virtual Classroom: Scheduled group classes presented using the Zoom Meeting online platform, with another 2 additional online instructor theory hours included;
3. Online Subscription: All classes are available by a secured student portal to watch at your own pace, with discounted instructor theory hours available for extended learning.

1. Pilot Requirements, Publications and Charts
An introduction to IREX, this unit discusses the privileges and limitations of an Instrument Rating, as well as required and relevant documentation, procedures, radiotelephony and charts.

2. Radio Navigation Aids, GNSS and PBN
Instrument navigation training includes ground-based navigation systems, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), Performance Based Navigation (PBN), Required Navigation Performance (RNP), and Reduced Vertical Separation Minima (RVSM).

3. Aircraft, Navigation & Alternate Requirements
The second navigation-based unit covers navigation requirements, flight planning, LSALT (Lowest Safe Altitude) theory, and also takes a detailed look at the factors determining the need to plan for alternate requirements (including weather conditions, aerodrome and aircraft navigation aids, and aerodrome lighting).

4. Departure, Arrival & Approach Procedures
Procedures for departure, arrival and approach are critical to instrument flying. This session covers Standard Instrument Departures (SIDs), Standard Terminal Arrivals (STARs), 2D and 3D instrument approach procedures, and Azimuth and Course Deviation (CDI) approach procedures.

5. Meteorology
Weather plays an enormous role in determining Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) conditions. IREX Meteorology theory covers weather phenomena, detailed meteorological information, IFR altimetry, and meteorological minima.

6. Human Factors
Human Factors theory relating to instrument flying includes flight without visual reference, vestibular system, perspective and Illusions, and Threat and Error Management (TEM).
