Fly In Any Conditions

A MECIR (Multi-Engine Command Instrument Rating) is an essential step in any successful pilot’s professional career. It allows you to pilot aircraft with more than one engine, and most importantly, it provides you with the flexibility and skills to depart and arrive at aerodromes safely when the weather is marginal or after dark.

Our MECIR course follows the CASA syllabus and includes a mix of training in twin-engine aircraft including the Piper Seminole and Diamond DA42, as well as our state-of-the-art Alsim AL42 full cockpit synthetic trainer. You will learn how to fly using your instrumentation rather than visual cues outside the aircraft, as well as advanced ATC communication and arrival and departure procedures for a range of different airspace types.

Expand Your Aviation Career Options

To commence MECIR (Multi-Engine Command Instrument Rating) training, you need to hold a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) or Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL).

The MECIR is highly valuable for any pilots looking to expand their aviation careers, and especially for those looking at eventually entering the airline industry. For many career pathways, holding this qualification is essential. The added skillset is crucial to your development as a pilot, and being able to fly more aircraft in more conditions allows you to build flying hours far faster.

We also offer the AVI50519 Diploma of Aviation (Instrument Rating) course, which follows MECIR syllabus. As an accredited education qualification, this course allows international students to apply for a student visa. It is also accredited for VET Student Loans (VSL) for eligible students.

  • 1. Prerequisite & Orientation

To complete this course, you must already hold either a PPL or CPL. If you have not had any prior multi-engine flying experience, then you will need to complete initial training before commencing the MECIR syllabus. Your orientation will include an introduction to the airport, airspace, aircraft fleet and our facilities.

  • 2. Multi-Engine Training

The Multi-Engine Rating is only required if you do not have prior multi-engine flying experience. You will use both the simulator and the aircraft to complete the training. Training will also include handling a multi-engine aircraft, handling the aircraft in an asymmetric situation (flying on one engine), and navigation.

  • 3. IREX Theory & Exam

Conducted using CASA IREX syllabus including principles of operation, accuracy and limitations of navigation aids, aircraft systems, human factors and meteorology. The exam is a 3.5-hour single paper multiple choice question exam, and a 70% pass mark is required to proceed with MECIR training.

  • 4. Simulation Training

Completed in our Alsim AL42 simulator, you will learn about instrument flying and procedures. This allows you to learn in a pressure-free environment, without weather and traffic factors.

  • 5. MECIR Flight Training

You will apply everything you have learnt during simulation training in a real aircraft through a series of planned navigation exercises with varying procedures, locations and scenarios.

  • 6. MECIR Flight Test

The MECIR flight test will cover all aspects of your MECIR training, including various instrument approaches.
