Sachin De Silva

Grade 2 Flight Instructor

Sachin was born and raised in Melbourne. From a young age, the allure to the skies beckoned to him, sparked by a trial flight at the age of 13.

Currently holding a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) with a frozen Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL), he has also achieved the esteemed status of a Grade 2 Flight Instructor with an invaluable Multi-Crew Cooperation (MCC) endorsement. His aviation pursuits are driven by a passion for the challenge, relishing the demanding conditions that test his limits and drive him to refine his skills with precision and excellence.

In the short term, Sachin aspires to attain endorsements in Formation Flying and Training, seeking to broaden his professional horizons. Yet, his ambitions reach far into the future, envisioning himself in the coveted role of a captain for an airline, where he can inspire and lead within the aviation community.

Beyond the cockpit, Sachin’s interests extend into the realms of art and creativity. He finds solace and joy in videography and photography, skillfully capturing moments that resonate with his artistic vision. However, his ultimate dream job transcends conventional aviation aspirations. Sachin aspires to become a test pilot for industry giants like Boeing or Airbus, a role that merges his passion for flying with a pursuit of innovation and technical excellence.

Sachin’s journey in aviation is a testament to his unwavering determination, thirst for challenge, and drive to reach for the skies. As he strives to transform his dreams into reality, the horizon is limitless, promising a future pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the world of aviation.

Jay Rodda

Grade 2 Flight Instructor

Jay’s passion for aviation sprouted in the soil of his family’s aviation legacy, with a family of pilots sharing stories and conversations of relatives who served as pilots for Ansett, it became the foundation for Jay’s pursuit to fly.

As he grew older, Jay embarked on a Trial Introductory Flight (TIF) to ascertain whether flying was indeed his calling. The experience was both thrilling and challenging. After the flight, he found himself perplexed by the task of trimming the aircraft, a moment of anxiety that only strengthened his resolve to master the intricacies of aviation.

Jay pursued a Bachelor of Aviation in Adelaide before then obtaining a commercial pilot’s license. In recent weeks, he celebrated the completion of the ATPL exams, demonstrating his commitment to excellence and mastery in the field.

In the short term, Jay’s focus is on honing his skills as an instructor, aiming to ascend to the coveted position of Grade 1 instructor. His commitment to the profession is unwavering, and he sees teaching as a way to pay it forward by helping future aviators achieve their goals. Looking far ahead into the future, Jay’s ultimate dream is to traverse international long-haul routes with an airline. The prospect of navigating the world’s skies, and connecting distant cultures and people, is a goal that fuels his passion for aviation.

Beyond the cockpit and the classroom, Jay finds joy in the simple pleasures of life. He enjoys embarking on solitary runs and hikes, sometimes accompanied by his favourite music, and other times with cherished friends. Jay is also a social netball enthusiast, modestly attributing his success on the court to his height.

Ian Mowat

Grade 2 Flight Instructor

Ian’s journey into the world of aviation began in Zimbabwe. The dream of taking flight had always been a constant in his life, tracing its origins to a pivotal moment when he received a Trial Instructional Flight (TIF) for his 16th birthday. This experience ignited a passion that would shape his future.

To realise his dream, Ian embarked on a path that led him to South Africa, where he completed his PPL. It was here that he took his first substantive steps into the world of aviation, setting a trajectory for a promising career

Ian’s journey led him to us at Learn To Fly, where he pursued our comprehensive training program that would take him from the fundamentals to expertise, culminating in the attainment of his instructor rating. Ian’s educational journey also included the completion of the CPL Diploma at LTF, marking another milestone in his pursuit of aviation excellence.

Aspirations for Ian extend far into the horizon — his ultimate goal is to serve either with the Royal Flying Doctor Service or as part of a major airline. His aspirations are not limited by the destination but rather fueled by the challenge and dynamism that aviation offers, an environment where no two days are alike.

Ian seeks balance in life by keeping active during his time off and cherishing moments spent with friends. The camaraderie and adventures shared with mates provide an integral part of balance in his life.

Rudy Beynon

Grade 2 Flight Instructor

Rudy has harboured a profound fascination with aviation since his early years, captivated by the sight of planes flying overhead and driven to understand the mechanics of flight. This enthusiasm guided his educational choices, aligning his subjects to complement a future career in aviation. In 2015, he completed a transformative Training Introductory Flight at Tooradin, further cementing his desire to take to the skies as a pilot.

His entire journey has been shaped by the ambition to become a pilot, ultimately leading him to his current position at Learn To Fly Melbourne.

Initially aspiring to be an airline pilot, Rudy’s exposure to the diverse pathways and facets of the industry shifted his ambitions. He realised there was much to explore before committing to a specific career path within the aviation domain.

In his pursuit, Rudy completed his Secondary Education VCE in 2015, covering subjects like English, Mathematics Methods, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Systems Engineering. He subsequently pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Aviation at Swinburne University of Technology, focusing on Human Factors, Meteorology, Aerodynamics, Aviation Law, Aircraft Systems, Flight Planning, and Navigation.

Describing himself as outgoing, determined, positive, and enthusiastic, Rudy’s personal interests include motorsport, travel, golf, and spending time at the gym. In his current role as a Grade 2 Flight Instructor, Rudy relishes the challenges of instructing, the camaraderie of the LTF team, and the joy of flying various aircraft, which fuel his passion for the aviation world. Looking ahead, Rudy remains open to the diverse possibilities the aviation industry offers, eager to explore and make a meaningful impact.

Terry Mitchell

Grade 3 Flight Instructor

Terry’s fascination with aircraft and their intricate workings began during school days, as his science teacher would employ the Airbus A380 as a constant case study. This early exposure began a lasting passion for aviation that would shape his future.

Although his early years were primarily dedicated to the insurance industry, Terry’s trajectory took a turn when the opportunity to begin flying presented itself. Terry made a remarkable transformation as he pursued and achieved his Bachelor of Aviation. Beyond his formal education, Terry embraced the adventurous spirit of aviation by delving into Seaplane and Aerobatics ratings, adding further dimensions to his skillset. Terry’s flight path led him to command hours from Shepparton, a journey marked by traversing outback navigation routes. The ever-changing challenges of the Australian outback became an integral part of his flying experience, adding a unique element to his story.

His sights are now set on a new chapter: sharing his accrued wisdom and insights to guide and support aspiring aviators. His ambition is to empower students, enhancing their learning journey by imparting the wealth of knowledge he has accumulated over his aviation odyssey. Terry’s dedication to education and his commitment to passing on his experiences will undoubtedly shape the aviation dreams of future pilots, future first officers and future first captains.

Moheth Yatheskumar

Grade 3 Flight Instructor

Mo developed an early fascination with aviation during their childhood — at the age of three, a pivotal moment occurred during a trip to India when he encountered a Boeing 747 on the apron, leaving them awe-struck by the immense size and audacious notion of flying. Initially, Mo pursued a career in medicine, but a revelation two weeks before the end of university application deadlines changed their course entirely. The longing for freedom and a life beyond the confines of an office or building led them to embrace their true passion for aviation.

Their aviation journey commenced at Massey University in Palmerston North, New Zealand, where they trained in DA40s. Despite facing challenges, the dream of becoming a Flight Instructor and eventually an Airline Pilot remained unwavering. The ultimate aspiration is to join Qantas in Project Sunrise, crossing continents and exploring the world from unparalleled perspectives.

With a Bachelor’s in Aviation and an impressive set of licenses, including CPL, ATPL, and MEIR, they relocated to Australia to be closer to family. Discovering Learn To Fly proved to be serendipitous, as the modern approach to aviation and the down-to-earth community captivated them. 

Beyond aviation, Mo embraces a passion for travel, exploring numerous countries to experience the world from different angles. Music and movies hold a special place in their heart, and they cherish spending quality time with family and friends. A self-proclaimed food enthusiast, they are open to trying diverse cuisines.

Mo finds great fulfilment in shaping the next generation of pilots and connecting with like-minded individuals. The most gratifying moments as an instructor arise when they guide their students to find solutions independently, witnessing those “click” moments when all the pieces fall into place in the students’ minds.

Martin Hussey

Grade 3 Flight Instructor

Martin’s fascination with aviation took root when a family trip exposed him to the world of flying. A chance to explore the cockpit ignited a lifelong passion for aviation.

Having completed a Bachelor of Aviation in Queensland, followed by rigorous training at the Qantas Group Pilot Academy, he relocated to Melbourne and further fortified his expertise by achieving his G3 FIR at Learn To Fly. Martin aspires to progress through the instructing ranks, aiming for Grade 2 and, ultimately, a Grade 1. Beyond his instructional role, his sights are set on serving with either the Royal Flying Doctor Service or the airlines.

When Martin’s feet are on the ground, he finds joy in sports like Cricket, AFL (where he passionately supports West Coast), and Formula 1. His curiosity about the world drives him to explore different cultures through travel, an endeavour that enriches his perspective. Martin finds profound fulfilment in imparting his wisdom to eager minds, witnessing their growth, and guiding them toward achieving their flying ambitions. Through every takeoff and landing, Martin’s journey continues to be one of passion, determination, and pursuit.

Alex Chen

Grade 3 Flight Instructor

Alex grew up in Hong Kong and later moved to Melbourne at the age of 15. After completing high school in Melbourne, Alex embarked on their flight training journey.

Having spent time at the Hong Kong International Airport during their upbringing, Alex developed a profound fascination for aviation. Witnessing the aircraft on the ground and in the air conducting operations sparked their interest in pursuing a career as a pilot. In high school, as Alex delved deeper into flight training, the realisation of the opportunity to become a pilot solidified their decision to follow this path wholeheartedly.

Alex’s flight training commenced where they honed their skills for about a year before transitioning to completing their Bachelor of Aviation (Pilot Training) and obtained their RPL, PPL, CPL, and FIR licenses.

Presently, as a Grade 3 flight instructor, Alex’s sights are set on further progression. The aspiration is to upgrade to Grade 2 and attain additional ratings and endorsements, including multi-engine class rating and IFR. Alex also expresses an eagerness to fly and teach with tailwheel aircraft. Ultimately, his dream is to work for a major international airline.

The allure of flying lies in the exhilarating experience and the breathtaking views it offers. The ability to multitask and maintain control of an aircraft serves as a constant source of fascination for Alex. In his role as a flight instructor, Alex finds immense satisfaction in assisting others in achieving their dreams of becoming pilots.

Outside of aviation, Alex enjoys playing soccer in their leisure time, though they humorously admit not being the most skilled player.

Shayaan Sohtra

Grade 3 Flight Instructor

Shayaan is a Grade 3 Flight instructor here at Learn To Fly. Growing up in the Middle East — Shayaan was always travelling to see family in other countries. Shayaan shares his favourite part about holidaying was boarding the aircraft, which kickstarted his fascination for aviation. He always knew he wanted to be a pilot from a very young age.

When Shayaan moved to Australia, he started flying at Moorabbin when he was 16. He was able to obtain his RPL at 17 and continued flying after finishing school and later finished his PPL, CPL with us here at Learn To Fly.  Shayaan also achieved his MEIR as well as FIR with us at Learn To Fly.

Shayaan is outgoing, vibrant and personable and always loves a good discussion. 

What hr enjoys about instructing the most is getting to know students’ dreams and ambitions and helping them achieve it! Shayaan believes that motivation is a great drive but flight training is sometimes be challenging so his goal is always to communicate and challenge students to think outside the box.

Shayaan is living part of his dream right now because ever since he started flight training he wanted to be an instructor. In the long term he aims to fly the PC-24 for the RFDS, helping people and meeting their needs.

Jake Lummis

Grade 2 Flight Instructor

Growing up, it was flying RC Model Aircraft that sparked Jake’s interest in aviation. Having attended airshows and completed a Trial Introductory Flight, a decision was made then to pursue aviation after school.

In 2014 Jake started flying lessons and trained/studied part-time while working. He then completed an Instructor Rating in 2018 where he then worked as an Instructor. Jake aims to become a Grade 1 Instructor, to complete his Multi-Engine and Instrument Rating — and then eventually fly larger aircraft in charter/air transport operations. 

Outside of flying, Jake enjoys the outdoors, camping, fishing, hiking and follows AFL (Big Western Bulldogs Fan!) and the F1. Jake prides himself on being a bit of a perfectionist, attentive and considerate person (we agree!).

Ask Jake what he enjoys most about his job and he will tell you two things — flying, and seeing students progress through the training.

Hannah Burnett

Grade 2 Flight Instructor

Hannah was born and raised in Melbourne. She studied for the Diploma of Aviation and went on to achieve her CPL and Multi-engine Class Rating. 

When going on holidays, Hannah often looked forward to flying. Pursuing an aviation career was always on her mind as a possibility after high school, but she first attended university for a year. After that year, she realised that her passion for aviation was stronger, and had never looked back. 

Hannah loves instructing her students, she takes great joy in passing on her knowledge and seeing them progress. She says it is very rewarding to watch them develop their own skills and show understanding of her lessons.

Hannah would love to one day fly for a major airline. In the immediate future, she looks forward to becoming a grade 2, grade 1, and then multi-engine instructor. 

Freddie Hui

Grade 3 Flight Instructor

Freddie came from Hong Kong to begin his flying career in Melbourne. He completed all his training at Learn to Fly achieving his RPL, PPL, CPL and MECIR right through to his Instructor Rating. Being 100% Learn to Fly made as a student, Freddie has continued his flying career with us as an instructor, coming full circle to help others achieve their goals. 

During Freddie’s childhood, he was always fascinated by planes flying through the sky. Now, Freddie says that he enjoys every moment of flying while passing on what he has learned to his students. He says that “students have the best classroom in the world from the cockpit, with a breathtaking view.”

Freddie is looking forward to progressing his career by pursuing his Instrument Rating and gaining experience in different aircraft particularly Multi-engine aircraft, which he hopes to master and one day teach. 

Lucas Rigg

Grade 2 Flight Instructor

Lucas was born and raised in Melbourne, bouncing around the South East suburbs.

Lucas grew up going to the Avalon AirShow with his dad whenever it was on, however, his journey to becoming a pilot began years later after finishing high school.

His first year out of school Lucas was looking for inspiration on what to pursue. After being prompted by a friend who had started their flight training, Lucas went on a whim and gave it a go. He completed his Bachelor of Science (Aviation) and began flight training. 2 years later he obtained his CPL and decided the next best step would be to start instructing.

In the future, Lucas is interested in starting to instruct aerobatics and tailwheel. Eventually, he hopes to fly for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and explore float plane flying.

Tom Logan

Grade 3 Instructor

Melbourne-born Grade 2 LTF Flight Instructor Tom Logan was fascinated by flying from a young age, and whilst he always really wanted to be a pilot, life had other plans initially. After high school Tom decided that learning to fly wasn’t really something he was able to afford, and so instead pursued a successful professional career as a Civil Engineer.

Fast forward 7 years, and that urge to fly was still there. Tom decided to look into his options again, found a way to make it work, and decided that he couldn’t let the opportunity pass him by. In another twist, Tom’s decision to switch from an established career to learning to fly came just before the COVID pandemic took hold. Despite the enormous challenges that presented, he wasn’t giving up.

Tom completed his CPL, MECIR and then a Flight Instructor Rating with us here at LTF – and now we welcome him to the team as a Flight Instructor. What a great success story, and an excellent example of why it’s never too late to chase your dreams.

Now as a professional pilot, Tom loves the feeling of being in the air and getting a perspective on the world that is totally different to what we get on the ground – and his ultimate goal is to become an airline pilot.

Brandon Sundaralingam

Grade 2 Flight Instructor

Born in Sri Lanka and raised in Melbourne, Grade 2 Learn To Fly Flight Instructor Brandon Sundaralingam has always loved anything aviation and travel-related. In 2017 he went for a Trial Introductory Flight and a session in the Boeing B737 simulator, and enjoyed it so much that he started flight training the following year.

After starting his training with another flight school, Brandon completed his CPL with us here at LTF. He then completed his MECIR with us, and then a Flight Instructor Rating, and now we’re thrilled to welcome him to our instructor team!

Brandon would one day like to see himself flying from the left seat of an Australia-based airline, and in the meantime:

“The sights you see from above are truly amazing, and the dynamic nature of flying keeps it fun/interesting 100% of the time.”

Brett Martin

Grade 2 Flight Instructor

Grade 2 LTF Instructor Brett Martin was born and raised on the Mornington Peninsula, a beautiful coastal area south-west of Melbourne that he’s now lucky enough to fly over as part of his job!

After completing a Trial Introductory Flight at Tyabb Airport, Brett was immediately hooked – and once he had begun his studies to become a pilot, he simply couldn’t see himself doing anything else for a career. He hopes to work towards becoming a Grade 1 Flight Instructor, and would one day love to be flying airliners.

From Brett: “The part of flying I love the most is the feeling of freedom once you leave the ground. It’s something that will never ever get old.”

Harley Tindal

Grade 3 Flight Instructor

Born on the picturesque Gold Coast in Queensland, Harley’s childhood was a tapestry of experiences spanning Victoria, North Queensland and even distant England. Eventually, his family settled in Melbourne.

His fascination with aviation ignited during a memorable trip aboard a B737, where Harley found himself peering out from the first officer’s seat, captivated by the panoramic view and the allure of the skies. At the tender age of seven, Maroochydore Airport became his haven, a place where he found solace amidst the soaring planes, watching them take flight from the end of the runway.
Financial constraints initially diverted Harley from pursuing aviation after completing high school. However, a transformative six-month hiatus reignited his passion. In 2020, Harley took his first flight as a student pilot, setting the stage for a series of milestones.

His dedication bore fruit as he obtained his Commercial Pilot’s License in March 2022, followed by his MECIR in December of the same year. November 2023 marked the completion of his FIR with Learn To Fly Melbourne, solidifying his commitment to excellence in aviation.

Harley’s aspirations soar beyond the horizon, envisioning a future where he contributes to organisations like the Royal Flying Doctor Service or commands the skies with a leading airline. Before realising these dreams, he yearns for a season in Canada or Alaska as a floatplane pilot.
In the short term, Harley aims to refine his skills as a Grade Two Instructor, conquer his ATPLs, and pursue Multi-Engine Training Approval. Beyond the cockpit, he enjoys family moments, marathon training, and supporting the Melbourne Storm in the NRL at AAMI Park.

Harley’s biography is a testament to a journey guided by childhood dreams and a relentless pursuit of the skies.

Rebecca Zhang

Grade 3 Flight Instructor

Rebecca Zhang was born and raised in Melbourne. Her journey into the world of aviation began with a solid educational foundation, as she completed her Bachelor’s degree before embarking on a career in food manufacturing in Sydney. However, it was the allure of the skies that ultimately captured her interest.

Rebecca’s formal aviation training took place at Learn To Fly Melbourne, where she successfully obtained both a Private Pilot License (PPL) and a Commercial Pilot License (CPL). Her foray into flying was not an immediate one; it was sparked by her father’s influence, and her curiosity only deepened over the years. The turning point occurred after a Trial Introductory Flight, prompting her to transition from curiosity to action and enrol in flight training.

In both the short and long term, Rebecca is enthusiastic about contributing to the aviation community. Currently focusing on honing her skills and assisting aspiring aviators. Ultimately, she aspires to work in the airlines, leveraging her expertise to contribute to the broader aviation industry.

Outside the cockpit, Rebecca enjoys a variety of personal interests and hobbies. Whether exploring new destinations, immersing herself in literature, or embracing the outdoors, she values the balance between her professional and personal life.

Sebastian Rossi

Grade 3 Flight Instructor

Seb’s journey into the world of aviation was a destined path that began as far back as memory serves. His fascination with aviation was ingrained in the hours spent meticulously assembling and flying model planes and the countless visits to airport lookouts. At the age of 16, Seb took his first Trial Introductory Flight (TIF). This experience was like the final piece of a puzzle falling into place, confirming his career direction. He embarked on his aviation journey immediately after completing school.

In his younger years, Seb harboured dreams of becoming a fast jet pilot, perhaps inspired by the allure of Top Gun. However, as he matured, his aspirations evolved. The path that once led to fighter jets transformed into a desire for an airline career, followed by a potential transition to corporate flying or even the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) should the opportunity arise.

In the short term, Seb envisions a continued journey towards becoming a Grade 2 flight instructor, with ambitions to eventually attain the coveted Grade 1 status. Along this path, he hopes to expand his teaching repertoire, specializing in tailwheel and multi-engine instrument flight rating (IFR) instruction. As he imparts his knowledge and experience to aspiring pilots, he continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of aviation.

Outside the realm of aviation, Seb finds solace in the warm embrace of summer and embraces an active lifestyle. His dedication to fitness and an active routine serve as a counterbalance to his intense study and work commitments.

Jomsy Mani

RTO Compliance Manager

Jomsy was born and raised in Kerala, the captivating state in Southern India known for its landscapes and serene backwater, where she developed a deep appreciation for education. She dedicated herself as a passionate physical science teacher in secondary schools, instilling a love for the sciences in the minds of young learners. Those early experiences shaped her commitment to education and ignited a desire to make a difference in students’ lives.

In 2011, Jomsy made the decision to settle in Australia, specifically in the city of Melbourne, which she now proudly calls home. Over the years, Jomsy has contributed significantly to the education sector in various roles, focusing on critical areas such as quality assurance, risk management, compliance monitoring, and policy development. Her role also involved data reporting, student progress monitoring, system analysis, business process design, and systems implementation and training.

Jomsy’s ultimate goal in this field is to continue making meaningful contributions towards RTO compliance, explicitly aiming to uphold the highest standards and align with the goals of Learn To Fly Melbourne. She is passionate about ensuring that educational organisations provide students with the best possible learning experience while maintaining integrity and adherence to compliance standards.

Cherishing exploring new destinations, immersing herself in diverse cultures, and savouring various cuisines is something Jomsy enjoys in her spare time. Adding “Pilot experience” to her bucket list is a goal that promises to unlock a new world of adventure and exploration from the cockpit, which allows her to take to the skies and explore the world from a unique perspective.

Michela Mandarino

Enrolment Officer

After completing her Diploma of Business Administration in 2019, Michela got a job in an RTO and loved it. Since then, she has worked in a variety of RTO roles all focusing on supporting and helping each student reach their full potential. 

Michela loves assisting students from the first initial conversation they have with their enrollment to the moment they complete their qualification, so when the opportunity came here at Learn to Fly as a student enrollment/support officer, she jumped at it. Michela has always had an interest in aviation, how everything works in the cockpit and hopes she can go up and sit inside and observe from afar. 

Rossetti Kwan

Finance Manager

In 2015 Rossettii moved to Melbourne, where they experienced the city’s unpredictable weather, often jokingly referring to “8 weathers in 2 hours”.  Among the wonders of the sky, rainbows hold a special fascination for Rossetti, symbolising hope, new beginnings, and transformation.

Throughout their career, Rossetti has gained diverse experiences in various fields, including wholesale and retail, manufacturing and production, secretarial and financial services, eCommerce, community services, and education. Among these, their favourite job involved working on philanthropy projects in Hong Kong.

Looking ahead, Rossetti’s dreams and ambitions lie in the world of aviation. They find great joy in facilitating the dreams of their students, from witnessing their first solo flights to congratulating them on passing theory exams. This fulfilling role at Learn to Fly allows Rossetti to contribute to the students’ journeys and help them achieve their aviation aspirations.

Rossetti’s academic background is rooted in numbers and mathematics. They hold a Master’s in Professional Accountancy from HK CyberU of HK Polytechnic University and a Diploma in Computer Studies from HK Computer Education Centre. Describing themselves as a curiouser and leisure photographer, Rossetti enjoys observing quietly and finds relaxation in classical orchestras with string instruments. Their patience with puzzles and admiration for the wonders of Mother Nature on Earth is evident in their outlook on life, which they sum up as “Take and Give,” embracing continuous learning and contributing to the well-being of others.

Presently, Rossetti holds the position of Finance Manager at Learn to Fly. Their journey within the organisation started as a Bookkeeper, eventually taking on responsibilities at the front desk and progressing to the role of Accounting Manager before settling into their current position.

Maximillian Fairclough

Marketing Manager

A creative observer, Max travelled the world documenting and creative directing in the music and entertainment industry for over a decade. Growing up in Perth, his curiosity and drive persuaded him to follow his work to North America before settling back in Australia and calling Melbourne home.

While Max’s principal focus was in the music and entrainment world, he was a creative director and producer for several Tourism Australia campaigns. Also, he played a role in the creative and photographic operations at Uber.

With a constant aspiration to develop something new, Max brings a balance of his expertise and creativity here at Learn To Fly. In his role here, Max is tasked with creating, planning and delivering a strategic vision. He is responsible for maintaining a cohesive visual and thematic style that displays the day-to-day operations, achievements and mantra at Learn To Fly and ensuring all creative executions remain faithful to the brand.

Max finds incredible satisfaction and reward in making things that allow people to connect, engage and stay curious. He also loves flying. 

Luke Wu

RTO Manager

Luke Wu grew up in Singapore, where he obtained his Diploma in Aviation Management and Services before getting his Bachelor in Aviation Management (Hons) from Massey University in New Zealand. As a student, Luke always enjoyed delving into the inner workings of the aviation industry, understanding the many layers that encompass what we now see as a commonplace occurrence. 

Since moving to Melbourne with his wife and 3 dogs in 2022, Luke has rekindled his interest in working in the aviation sector whilst building on his passion for out-of-classroom teaching methods and student welfare management. Luke wants to help students realise their dream of becoming pilots, especially those from countries with more limited General Aviation opportunities.

Cam Meyer

Safety Manager | Grade 1 Instructor

Aviation has always been a part of Cam Meyer’s life. Following in his father’s footsteps, he first took flying lessons in 1982; however, school and university delayed flying training in earnest until 1992. Cam’s interest in the technical aspects of aeroplanes and piloting is what led to him becoming a flight instructor, working at various flying schools at Moorabbin and at Avalon. 

Most of his flying in the past 12 years has been with aerial photographers and flight instructor training, but he had the most fun as an aerobatics joy flight pilot and training for a low-level rating. 

Cam developed an interest in aviation safety management when it started emerging as a “new idea” for general aviation in the early 2000s, introducing formal safety systems for the flying schools worked for and eventually taking it on as a full-time role in 2020.

Cam applies his extensive knowledge and experience in aviation and safety management to his role at Learn to Fly as a Part 142 Safety Manager. He is responsible for investigating and reporting on the company’s aviation risk exposure management and fostering a robust safety culture within the organisation, an ideal that must be fiercely defended and meticulously nurtured. 

Cam enjoys cycling to work every day with Pepper the dog in her trailer behind to find out what challenges have to be met each day.

John Sabato

Career Development, Mentoring and Interview Preparation Course Facilitator

John Sabato is our Career Development, Mentoring and Interview Preparation Course Facilitator. John has a wealth of experience across various sectors of the aviation industry, with a career spanning more than 12 years.

For 7 of these years, John flew with Cathay Pacific, where he was a First Officer, flying the Airbus A330 and A350 type aircraft on long-haul routes. He is type-rated on the B737, and he now flies for one of Australia’s largest airlines in a domestic setting. John’s own journey to becoming an airline pilot was assisted by the comprehensive preparation offered by an airline interview preparation course and high-quality mentorship in the early stages of his general aviation career. This helped him form a good understanding of the employment options available after his flight training.

John’s journey has provided him with a unique perspective on the process and requirements, and an understanding of just how important that first airline application and interview is. It has also given him a huge passion for assisting others to get their own “first airline start”.

We’re thrilled to have John on board for our Future Cadet Pilot Program, Career Development/Mentoring Workshops and Airline Interview Coaching Session courses – to help give the next generation of airline pilot hopefuls the sound preparation and competitive edge they need to succeed in their budding careers.

Darren McPherson

Training Consultant

Senior Captain Darren McPherson has over 30 years and 18,000 hours of flying experience. Starting his career as an aero club boy, Darren is a great example of what can be achieved through perseverance and dedication.

His experience as an aviation career specialist has helped countless pilots to achieve their dreams of flying for major airlines around the world. We are extremely lucky to have his wealth of knowledge on board here at Learn To Fly as a highly valuable associate consultant.

Joshua Best

Student Training Manager | Grade 1 Instructor

Josh started his flying training at age 16 but was born with aviation in his blood. He remembers flying around the Victorian Gippsland region in Cessna 172s with his grandfather as a small child, as well as regular trips to some of the larger airports to watch the “big planes” coming and going.

As a Flight Instructor, Josh loves the fact that every day there is something different to teach. He’s also a big fan of the fact that typically, every customer or student leaves with a smile on their face after flying.

Whilst Josh would one day love to fly in a domestic passenger transport role, his ultimate goal is to join the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Nick Harris

Head of Operations | Grade 1 Instructor

Originally from London, Senior Base Pilot and Grade 1 Flight Instructor Nick Harris has been flying for over 12 years. He tells us that it “seemed like a good idea at the time” to become a pilot, but we think that maybe it had more to do with growing up watching the Concorde take off over his house (um, that’s pretty awesome).

As an instructor, Nick loves seeing how excited students get after their first solo, or after passing their flight test.

He hopes to one day fly a Tiger Moth around Australia – and in fact, he’s actually building one at the moment to do just that!

Mickey Wu

Taiwan Flight Training Consultant

Mickey’s fascination with aviation was sparked by the enchanting tales of Laputa and the daring adventures depicted in Studio Ghibli’s “The Castle in the Sky.” Captivated by the romantic notion of exploring the boundless sky, he resolved to master the art of flying.

Among the myriad experiences of his aviation journey, one stands out vividly: his inaugural solo flight under the watchful guidance of mentors like Shannon, Casey, and Ulysses. Against the backdrop of a December evening, Mickey took to the skies, tracing circuits against a golden sunset—a defining moment in his odyssey.

Navigating through aviation challenges, Mickey encountered hurdles with checklists and radio calls. Yet, through relentless practice and the unwavering support of instructors like Shannon and companions like Jed and Clement, he persevered, embracing the ethos of Learn To Fly, where asking for help is a testament to courage.

Inspired by the nurturing environment and camaraderie at Learn To Fly, Mickey aspires to contribute his experiences and expertise to the team, fostering a community where aspiring pilots can thrive.

Beyond aviation, Mickey finds solace in the world of coffee, where he serves as a bar in a bustling café. Drawing parallels between the café’s dynamics and the cockpit’s organized chaos, Mickey embraces the fast-paced environment, honing his communication skills and prioritization — an endeavour that enriches his perspective and readiness for the challenges ahead.

Adam Butterfield

Training Consultant - Online

Adam has always had an adventurous spirit. His interest in aviation was born at an early age through his Dad, who was a Cathay Pacific pilot. Watching planes land at Kai Tai airport and hearing the roar of their engines is one of his earliest aviation memories.

Following his graduation from University, he decided to pursue the opportunity to play Rugby for the Hong Kong National team and build a Recruitment business. 

However, his desire to pursue a career in aviation never subsided, so he decided to make the career change in 2023 and chase his dream of becoming a pilot by obtaining a Recreational Pilot License with Learn to Fly. From day one, it was love at first flight, and the exhilaration of his first solo only confirmed that he had made the right decision. 

Adam joined Learn to Fly as a Flight Training Consultant as he was keen to share his excellent experience with the school and relevant knowledge with other aspiring pilots, especially those considering airline cadet pilot programs as that aligns with his own career goals.

Other than flying, Adam enjoys a healthy, active, and balanced lifestyle by playing a variety of sports, exploring one of Hong Kong’s many trails or remote beaches, and eating with friends at the many restaurants that Hong Kong has to offer. 

John Chan

Hong Kong Flight Training Consultant

John Chan is our Learn To Fly Flight Training Consultant in Hong Kong. He initially completed his flight training here with us in Melbourne back in 2016, before returning home to Hong Kong.

Since his return, John has worked with us to help promote aviation in Hong Kong and to educate fellow Hong Kongers on how to fulfil their dreams of becoming a pilot.

In his Flight Training Consultant role, he is able to provide valuable advice to future Hong Kong pilots that are thinking about a career in aviation, especially the students who want to apply for airlines’ cadet pilot program.

Shuntai Tan

Singapore Flight Training Consultant

Shuntai Tan is our Learn To Fly Flight Training Consultant in Singapore. He initially completed his flight training here with us in Melbourne back in 2017, before returning home to Singapore.

Since his return, Shuntai has worked with us to help promote aviation in Singapore and to educate fellow Singaporeans on how to fulfil their dreams of becoming a pilot.

In his Flight Training Consultant role, he is able to provide valuable advice to future Singaporean pilots that are thinking about a career in aviation, or just wanting to fly for fun. Shuntai can assist you in organising both theory training onshore in Singapore and flight training in Australia.
